Would you like to call internationally from your mobile phone without having to pay the high per minute rates from your cell carrier or manually having to use a calling card and remembering to actually use the card in the first place?  Using the RebelSim Dialer Call through SIM, you can have your phone automatically intercept outgoing international calls to instead first dial your calling card access number, send the number you actually dialed, and ultimately connect your call at a cheaper rate (calling card rate + local minute rate from your carrier as opposed to international rate from your carrier).

What is it and how does it work?

http://www.youtube.com/v/l249iGuEnuw&feature

What this device essentially allows you to do is have outgoing calls that start with either 00 (international), 1, or just 0 be automatically dialed through a calling card or VoIP access number instead of direct.   This paper thin device actually fits between your SIM card and your phone in order to “capture” what you are dialing, then dials the access number first when necessary:

rebelsimcard rebelsimcard2

Usually, when dialing internationally direct from your mobile phone, you will be charged fairly high rates per minute from your carrier such as £1.45/min calling from Tesco UK to US or $1.49/min calling from AT&T US to UK.  Then, of course, you have local calls which will either be part your monthly minute plan or generally a much cheaper per minute rate.

With international calls, you can traditionally get around these higher rates by using a calling card with a local access number that you can call as a “local number” from your cell phone (UK landline numbers if you live in the UK or any US number if you live in the US).  Then, dial the international number through your calling card and get charged “local minute rates” from your cell carrier plus whatever international rates you get from your calling card.

For example, say I wanted to call home to the states from my mobile phone in the UK.  Normally I would dial 001 999 999 9999, with the “00” meaning international, “1” meaning the states, followed by the number.  With my particular cell carrier (Tesco), this would cost me £1.45 per minute, but with my calling card, it would cost me £0.01 per minute – quite a big difference! Using the Rebel Sim Call through SIM, it will see that the number starts with 00 and it will instead dial the access number for my calling card when I press send to dial that international number.  Once the phone has dialed my card’s access number, it is then able to automatically send the digits (via DTMF*) of the number I actually dialed thus completing the international call via my calling card as opposed to directly from my mobile carrier.  My call will now cost £0.01 per minute plus minutes from my monthly minute plan as opposed to £1.45p per minute.

(* less technical explanation:  Think about how you normally use a calling card. You call the calling card number, it prompts you for the number you want to call, and then it connects the call.  The RebelSim Call through SIM automates this process by “seeing” that you dialed 00, then dialing the calling card number, pauses, and then dials the original out going number)

How to setup:

  • First off, this won’t work if you are using a micro SIM – sorry iPhone 4 users – because the RebelSim is of “normal” SIM size, but it will work for anyphone that uses a normal size SIM.  Also, the latest (v2) firmware also does not support entering an ID or pin number, so you’ll need a provider that works by caller ID (you call the access number, and it recognizes your caller ID for authentication for your account); that being said, v2.1 will be released soon which will allow the use of an ID/pin, as well as additional configuration options than the ones discussed later on below.
  • What you have to do first is punch a “hole puncher” size hole in the top plastic part of your SIM card. This is for the chip on the Rebel Sim Call through SIM to fit in between your phone and your normal SIM (you can either buy a RebelSim cutter, or use your own hole puncher).  Don’t worry, it’s just plastic on the top of your SIM card – it won’t damage anything and you can still use it even if you are not using the RebelSim.

hole punch cutter cut together

  • Then, of course, you need to put them in your phone.  The manual suggests putting the Rebel SIM in first, then sliding your normal SIM in on top of it – I’ve found it easier at times to just put them in together at the same time, but I suppose it’s just a matter of how easy/hard it is to access your SIM slot
    in the phone
  • Next, you’ll need to have a calling card or VoIP service that has an access number.  Any calling card has an access number, as that’s how they’re setup to work, but not all VoIP providers have one.  Personally, I use a VoIP provider as they usually don’t charge connection fees, their rates are easy to understand, and they can be used with a SIP/Soft phone as well.   I personally use VoipFone (rates and access numbers) as they allow pin-less usage but there are plenty of others such as Call Centric (rates andaccess numbers) if you are in the States and  VoipTalk (rates and access numbers) in the UK (once v2.1 comes out for the RebelSim Callthrough).

Note:  which ever calling card or VoIP provider you use must have an access number that doesn’t require you to use a pin since the current firmware of Call Through only supports dialing the access number.

  • And last, you need to add the access number and configure the options on the Rebel Sim.  When you turn on your phone with the RebelSim, you should see a new menu option.  On my Pirelli DP-L10 wifi phone, you can see this on the main menu, with other phones it will probably show up in different locations but either way a new option will appear somewhere and will have the same configuration options/steps:
    with rebel

Select the new RebelSim option and you will be brought to the configuration page with the following options:
    – Disable (don’t use the RebelSim)
    – *Enable (use the RebelSim)
    – Editing Number (edit the access number)
    – Dialing Rules (4 options on when to use the RebelSim: when there is a 00, 1, or 0 in the beginning of the dialed call, or use it always)
    – Dialing Speed (this is basically how fast the number is dialed once the access number is called – I haven’t had an issue using it on “Fast”)
    – Dialing Mode (two options, don’t really know what it means, but ICC2 is said to be needed for the iPhone, and ICC1 works on my Pirelli phone)

All you should have to mess with here is the Editing Number and Dialing Rules.  Select Editing Number to change the access number and Dialing Rules to determine when the RebelSim should be used.  For my particular usage, I use Dialing Rule “00” to use for international calls and Editing Number “02070990707” as the access number for VoipFone.co.uk.

Then, dial out!  In the picture below, you can see that I dialed a random international US number (001 770 123 4567), and when I pressed send, you can see that the phone automatically called the access number instead (02070990707):
dial internationalOnce the call is connected, you hear a dial tone from the speaker (which is VoipFone saying it’s ready for a number to connect to).  After a couple of seconds, the dial tone goes away which is when the RebelSim dials the number I actually entered (you don’t actually hear anything until you hear ringing which means the number you dialed is ringing) – and that’s it, you just made a cheaper international call from your mobile phone.

Final thoughts:

Using the Rebel Sim Callthrough SIM is a great way to make dialing international numbers from your cell phone cheap and easy.  Could you simply remember to dial the access number and skip the use and purchase of the RebelSim?  Yep!  Could you opt to just use a smartphone app to use a data connection and use Voip?  Yep!  That being said, I like the idea of this “working in the background” because I could then give it to a friend, family member, etc and not have to explain to them how to make international calls or have to worry about someone, or myself, accidentally making an expensive £1.45/min call.

Another useful aspect about this particular Rebel Sim (“Rebel Sim II”) is that you can load 3 different types of firmware on it (providing you have one of their programmers):  the Call Through (v2), Call Back (v3), or their HTC unlocking firmware (v1).  Plus for £7 + shipping (worldwide), it’s not too bad of a deal!

Pros:

  • Set it up and forget it approach for cheap international calls from mobile phones
  • Cheap
  • Will work with any phone that uses regular size SIM cards (the phone can be locked or unlocked, from anywhere in the world, on any carrier, etc)
  • Can be repurposed with 3 different firmwares ( one for call through, one for unlocking HTC phones, and the other a different approach for cheap mobile calls)
  • Simple to configure

Cons:

  • Latest firmware does not allow to use access numbers that require you to enter a PIN or ID number to use (though it can with firmware v2.1, which is to be released soon)
  • Can be a bit tricky to sandwich it with your existing SIM card and push into the SIM slot on some phones
  • Doesn’t work with micro SIM cards (won’t work with iPhone 4)

Over the next few weeks for the 2010 World Cup it’s been estimated that as many as 25,000 football fans from the England & 10’s of thousands from around the world will be going off to South Africa.

The Rebel Simcard Team have made a guide  How Not to not get mobbed by Roaming Charges while travelling and created some special Deals on some clever products that can help you Beat the Networks at thier own Game game with a little bit of Know how.

If you’re one of those preparing to make to make the trip, a few preparations before you go will ensure that your main memory of the tournament isn’t an unexpected mobile phone bill that you will be receiving up on returning.

So Dont go packing your bags before reading and understand all the options you have to save yourself Burning Money while on holiday.

It’s been estimated that fans travelling to the World Cup could spend hundreds of pounds calling, texting and uploading pictures from their mobiles.

Very important and mostly over looked is the Fact the travellers forget to turn of their Voice mail in the sim they are roaming with and can end up with £100’s of charges simply but not answering their phones. When you are roaming and you dont answer then the call is sent to your voice mail system and full roaming charges apply as if you were making a call so beware.

You see these charges for the UK mobile network in the List at the end of the page. You will see that its not cheap at all and they are planning to make huge profits from you.

Although international roaming call charges in the EU have fallen, roaming charges in countries like South Africa averaging £1/minute for making and receiving calls make a big hole in your pockets in no time at all.

Once in South Africa it may be cheaper to buy a local SIM card which you can put in your unlocked handset and used to dial numbers in that country and use call back services to call back Home.

SIM cards can be bought at many retail outlets including mobile phone shops, supermarkets and grocery stores or online from rebel simcard or solutions point websites.

If you want to upload pictures and videos from the match to the internet, then it may be cheaper to use a computer at an internet café or at your hotel rather than use your phone as the prices for MMS is not cheap at all and averaged around £0.75 each to send if your roaming and is much cheaper with a local simcard for South Africa

Most international hotels have wireless connections either in guest rooms, business centres or some restaurants, and internet cafes can also be found throughout the country but if you want to take your own wireless unlocked dongle or Mifi router you will have much more flexibility.

If you are going to use the web while away then avoid using public terminals – such as internet cafes – for online banking. Also, remember that wireless connections usually not using Latest firmwares in thier wireless routers with WEP2 standards and use the older crackable ones so your data is not safe and can be viewed by others.

SIM Application Toolkit (commonly referred to as STK) is a standard of the GSM/UMTS/CDMA system which enables the SIM to initiate actions which can be used for various value added services.

The SIM Application Toolkit consists of a set of commands programmed into the SIM card which define how the SIM should interact directly with the outside world and initiates commands independently of the handset and the network.

This enables the SIM to build up an interactive exchange between a network application and the end user and access or control access to the network.

The SIM also gives commands to the handset, such as display menu and ask for user input.

To Sum up the STK is an Application that resides on a network sim. Through this STK the network operator add some Extra functions by providing a Menu within a mobile phone to supply services.

As their are 1000’s of mobile phones and 100’s of Brands we want to give you the power to change the way Rebel simcard works by changing its mode from a Menu within the Phone. This way you can have the power to increase the number of phones rebel simcard can Unlock without the need to Use a PC and software or Card Readers to configure or program its settings each time.

This is a very powerfull Menu and if you have a phone that is not compatiable with the Default Mode for unlocking then you can change the mode of rebel sim from within the phone to another one thats compatiable with your mobile.

On the Downloads Page We have a List of the Firmwares for Rebel Sims. Next to each firmware is a YES or No to indicate if the firmware has the Rebel STK Menu. The Rebel STK can be used to control the mode you want to use rebel sim to unlock your mobile.

How Can the Rebel STK Menu be used and why do i need it ?

The Rebel Simcard STK Menu is a menu that appears within the mobile phone and can be Accessed to make configuration changes for unlocking presets that are already prestored in the Rebel Sim so you dont have to program the rebel sim using a card reader if you happen to change phone models or choose to use phone from a different Brand and want to reconfigure the Rebel Simcard then you would need to use it.

Another use of the STK menu can be found in the rebel simcard II using the Call control firmwares v2 or v3.

Here the STK menu is used by the user to enter the access number for a Calling card service and Pin number. Also other config changes can be made by selecting the Rules menu option to select the Rule to use.

To load the STK applications to a network simcard you need some keys. There are 3 OTA keys available for a SIM Card (KID, KIC, KIK). So firstly you have to know these keys (In the most cases the KID key is enough for loading).

However We can supply custom applications for STK for your unique requirements without the KID, KIC, KIK keys.

Normally only the network simcard operator can supply special STK functions for their simcard. However the Rebel Simcard Technology when installed with a network simcard can overtake the network simcard default STK and replace with our own Menu and functions. Email us for more info.

Whats the Rebel Sim II v2 and v3 firmwares used for ?

The Rebel sim II Call Control V2 & v3 Firmwares allow you to use a Rebel sim II as a Least Cost Routing System that automates the Process of Dialling when using 2 types of technologies. Call Through using Call Back.

Q Whats the Meaning of Call control by sim.

A Call setup attempts will result in the telephone numbers dialled being sent first to the Rebel SIM card. The Rebel SIM card can then decide whether to allow those actions to be carried out or to perform another action instead that can you have pre programmed.

Using the Rebel Sim II you can set up rules that perform a particular action when you dial a number that starts  with 00. International call are often very expensive from mobiles and to reduce these cost using Call control is done when ever you dial an international number starting 00 is dialled then the Rebel Sim II stops a Direct call being made from your mobile phone and is rerouted via a cheaper Voip/Calling Card service.

Whats the Meaning of Call Through and Voip/Calling card Gateway

We all don’t like it when have to pay through the roof for anything. Calling Cards and VOIP systems are much cheaper to use when calling international numbers. 80% of calling cards use the Call Through method to offer cheaper calling services.

Calling cards for Call through can be purchased worldwide as the industry is huge and available for 70% of countries.

Call through Works by  you the calling card user first Calling a Local access number and then you call through this number by sending the DTMF of the number you want to call.

Say now we have purchased a calling card to use and this calling card comes with 2 numbers that we would need to use each time to use the service.

Calling Card Access number This is a Local Landline Number & is the number thats called when you want access the cheaper rates.

Calling card Pin number The Pin is used to authenticate yourself as a valid calling card user to the calling card service.

If you dont use Rebel Sim II to Automate this process users would normally follow the following steps to make a call via calling card from mobile phones using Call through..

  1. Call Access Number
  2. Enter Pin Number
  3. Enter the Number you want to call

Now this can get complicated as users would need to either memorise the number they want to call or make a note of the number on a paper pad and also carry the calling card around with them for each time they want to use the cheaper calling service.

Using the Rebel Sim II V2 & v2.1 the calling process can be simplified and automated via the STK where the access number and pin can be populated once. Then the calling process Experience for the end user becomes like a Direct Dialled call as all the process is automated by the Rebel Sim II.

Soon as a user dials a number that starts with 00 then Rebel Sim II will automatically call the  pre stored Calling card access number and then when the call is answered and the calling card server asks for the Pin then Rebel sim II sends the DTMF for this and then sends the number you dialled so call is connected without users needing to change their dialling habit.

Whats the Meaning of Callback

Call Back is another Telecoms Least cost routing system that can be used to Least cost route calls.

A callback in this sense is a method of making low cost international calls via a third country, usually the US or UK where call charges are considerably lower.

In order to use a callback service to trigger a return call a unique number DDI/DID Access Number must first be dialled which never answers the incoming call and simply supplies a busy signal so that call is ended . From your Caller ID (CLI) the system checks to see if you have funds before it calls you back.

Now the Callback Server calls you back and when you answer you have dial tone and can dial your number and be connected.

Through the use of the Rebel Sim II v3 firmware this process can be fully automated so you can simply dial the international number and the Rebel will Automatically call instead the Callback Access Number and End the Call.

Now the Callback Server calls you back and simply answer the call and the Rebel Sim will send the DTMF tones of the number you dialled in the first place to connect you call.

Automatic GSM diallers can be either be installed as software or as hardware.

This Demo shows how to use the Rebel Sim II Dialler v2 firmware in iphone 3GS which is a Hardware based Automatic Least Cost Routing Dialling System.

The hardware Rebel  sim II  dialler is a thin chip of a similar shape to a phone’s SIM that sits between the SIM and the phone.

A sim dialer allows users to use international calling card services through the mobile phone without changing normal dialing procedures.

Once set up has been Completed users dont need to worry about being charged Excessive Prices for international calls and the system Detects numbers that Start with 00 and routes the call automatically to your desired Calling service Access number.

The STK Sim Application Toolkit is a Universal Standard used to create applications that reside on network simcards. Normally it is not possible to load applications on to a network simcards and only the network can supply functions that use the STK.

Solutions Point Limited Specialise in Sim Overlay technology which consists of a FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) thats 0.1 mm thick and has a Micro controller mounted and fits underneath network simcards in mobile phone sim gates.

This allows the provision of new applications through the use of the sim over lay technology. The Default STK provided by the network sim operator is ignored and its possible to Provide custom applications that use the Sim Application Toolkit.

This has already been successfully demonstrated with Solutions Point Limited’s Flag ship Sim overlay Product http://www.RebelSimCard.com

How Does Call Back Work and How can i Save ?

The Call Back Automated Dialler Routes your International Calls Via Your Selected callback Provider.

The Way it Works is You Simply purchase The Rebel Sim Call Back Dialler and insert this between your network sim just like when using the Rebel simcard To unlock the Phone.

Let me just explain the most users around the world would use rebel sim II call through V2 firmware for lease cost routing from mobiles.  However the Callback is another clever system to help you beat the high charges networks want to charge you.

I will give an example now that i travel to USA on a 3 week visit and if while Roaming on the Orange network

Calls made while in USA will cost 95 p/min    and for Receiving 55 p/min

Now thier are few diffrent options.

1 You install the callback sim with your orange sim

2 You purchase a local simcard from USA to use while you are thier

Now you just add the callback access number from your voip provider 00442070990808 which in this example is the http://www.voipfone.co.uk callback access number.

Rebel Sim Call Back Dialler STOPS a Direct Call being made to the international Number and instead Dials a Access Number which is a Land line number given by your service provider and gets a busy signal and call is not connected.

Then a call comes back from your service provider and the Rebel Sim Call Back Dialler Automatically sends the number you dialled via DTMF and you are connected but pay alot less via your Telecoms Supplier.

If you have a spare Rebel Sim II then you can also program the firmwares for Call Back or Call through using the programmers and make saving when calling international numbers.
